When choosing a perch for your pet bird or Parrot there are a few things to consider. Firstly your bird`s perch should be comfortable so try choosing one suitable for your bird`s size.

It is also recommended to provide your bird with other perches of varying diameters; this helps to keep your bird`s feet well exercised and healthy. Natural wood perches are a great choice as they provide lots of variation. Please note that it is not uncommon for many hardwood perches to have splits in them, the splits occur as the wood hardens and dries out and are a good indicator of the hardness. Plus they make great places for wedging treats in!

There are many other materials used to create some fun and interesting perches, and like toys, having a variety of perches available for your bird is important. Rotating perches as well as moving them around the cage is a great way to keep your bird`s cage an interesting place to be.

Remember many Parrots, particularly Cockatoos and Macaws, are great chewers and some wooden perches may not withstand this. Even the Java and Manzanita perches are not indestructible (although they are extremely hard!). And of course Parrots need to chew - make sure there are plenty of other, more interesting chewable material to get their beaks into.
